9/8/26 Lake Erie Walleye Fishing Report — Central Basin out of Lorain
September 8, 2026
A change in the weather and a change in the water’s oxygen content have made a huge difference in the Central Basin of Lake Erie. The walleye are back on the chew — making long, long runs to get to them. Wind has been light to moderate all around the compass; what’s helped us most is the moderate days out of the northeast, bringing cold, oxygenated water. Waves have been between 1 and 3 feet for the most part. Air temperature in the mid-70s, skies mostly sunny with a shower here and there.

I have been making a very long run out to roughly 62 feet of water to start trolling away from the marina. The Central Basin walleye are back on the chew with 300 feet of wire and deep big Thundersticks. Dipsys on a three setting at 140 feet, a two setting at 110 feet, and 80 feet on a one setting with Junior Thunderstick shallows have all taken bites. Downriggers with 50 feet of cable out and Big Moe’s 2.5 square bills 15 feet behind the ball have also taken many bites. Limits have been very common — it just takes so long to get there. It takes more time to get there and back than it does to catch your limit of walleye. The grade has been absolutely amazing, fish averaging 20 to 22 inches with an occasional bigger 26-plus. I haven’t hit an official Fish Ohio yet — it’s been close, but not quite there.
